Gustafson and McMorran share the wins at SPA

HRA Spa Race Festival

The latest round of the F3 Historic European Championship took place at Spa over the weekend of July 22nd – 24th; a total of seven cars started qualifying, non arrivals were the Tecnos of Philippe Bonny and Michel Renavand. Roland Fischer set the fastest overall time in session one but sadly encountered engine problems which ruled him out of the rest of the meeting. Paul McMorran was next up less than a second behind in the Crossle 17F which had been rebuilt after its Cadwell adventures; Ferdinand Gustafson’s familiar Brabham BT 18 was in third ahead of Vincent Rivet. Rivet was also afflicted by engine problems and took no further part in the proceedings; Max Blees showed he had lost none of his speed ahead of Christoph Widmer and Leif Bosson.

Race one started in damp conditions which deteriorated as the race went on, Gustafson took the lead of the F3s from the start and held it all the way to the finish, McMorran had a couple of tentative looks, but decided to settle for second, third was Blees slowed by a spin at Bus Stop, ahead of Widmer and Bosson.

Race two was definitely wet with ‘rain tyres’ all round, Gustafson was a little slow away from pole and McMorran took the F3 lead by La Source and apart from switching off his fuel pump in the Bus Stop managed to stay ahead to the finish. Blees closed up on Gustafson who lost second with a spin at Pouhon, recovering to take third. Blees had the bit between his teeth and closed to within 1.7secs of McMorran by the finish, Bosson taking fourth and Widmer fifth.

Many thanks to Roland Fischer, Ferdinand Gustafson and Paul McMorran for their versions of the weekend’s events; hopefully they have been presented correctly.
